iphoneBoy, is there some hype going on. Imagine, the world`s biggest software company is about to deliver it`s new operating system (revenue generating system?), but everyone is talking about a phone.

Opinions are of course divided – as they were when the iPod was first introduced. But here I found one lucky guy that actually got to play with it. And posted a video.

The upside of us in Europe having to wait until autumn will be that we won`t get any of the 1st generation problems. And hopefully, software development will have picked up. I am quite excited about what the fact will bring, that the iPhone runs OSX. There was no concrete demo of it in Steve Job`s keynote – so I am sure that there will be more exciting announcements before the phones hit the market.

It can do more than my buggy SonyEricsson p990i (which is supposedly their flagship smartphone), but I had to laugh when I saw James Bond using it. Mine crashes even when it sends an SMS.

Bottom line for me is

  • As a phone, it is too expensive
  • As an iPod, it is too expensive
  • As an advanced PDA it is o.k. priced
  • All the functions in one little machine, the Apple logo on it? Very reasonably priced. I want one. I might want one. See update 2

Update: It appears that the iPhone does not record video. That is surprising and highly disappointing.

Update II: It appears that Apple might add videorecording capabilities by June. But the iPhone will not allow software to be added. No games. It won’t open Word or Excel files. No Flash or Java support in the browser. You cannot swap the battery yourself. Americans are chained the a carrier that many people seem to be dissatisfied with. It might be that the phone costs more in Europe, where it won’t be bundled with a carrier. Is that a $500 phone that is supposedly 5 years ahead of the competition?
